Structural Steel Frames Versus C-Section Kits
Most shed and stable suppliers build with C-section (also called C-purlin) frames. C-section is lighter, cheaper to produce, and faster to roll. It suits light-duty storage where load requirements are modest and longevity is secondary to upfront cost.
Horse stables are not light-duty storage. They house animals year-round, carry significant roof loads, and need to resist lateral wind pressure across open or semi-open fronts. The frame needs to perform without deflection or corrosion failure for 30 or more years.
Trusteel builds every stable with Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS), universal beams (UB), or Open Web Trusses (OWT), selected according to the span and load each stable requires. All three are closed or structural profile members, which means they resist torsional and lateral forces that open C-section frames cannot manage as effectively. They cost more to fabricate. The result is a structure that does not flex, rust from the inside, or require remedial work within a decade.

The Build Process
Trusteel manages every stage from first consultation through to handover. You deal with one team.
- Site Assessment: A Trusteel team member visits your property. They assess the site conditions, paddock layout, drainage, access, and any planning overlays that affect the build. This shapes the design brief.
- Design and Engineering: Your stable is drawn and engineered to your site. Stall sizes, door placements, roof pitch, ventilation ridgeline, and structural frame sizing are all specified at this stage. No generic templates are used.
- Permits and Building Code of Australia (BCA) Compliance: Trusteel prepares and submits your building permit application where required. Because Trusteel holds VBA building licences in-house, no third-party registered builder is needed. You are not managing this step.
- Fabrication at Mulgrave: Your stable frame and cladding components are fabricated at Trusteel’s Mulgrave facility. RHS sections are cut, drilled, and prepped before delivery to site. Lead times vary by build size and current schedule.
- Concrete and Site Preparation: Trusteel manages concrete slab preparation and pour where required. You do not need to source a separate concreter. This is included in your build scope.
- Construction and Handover: Trusteel crews erect the structure on site. On completion, you receive a structure built to the engineered drawings, compliant with permit conditions, and covered by Trusteel’s lifetime structural warranty.
Permits for Horse Stables in Victoria
Whether your stable requires a building permit in Victoria depends on the size of the structure, the zoning of your land, and whether the structure is classified as a Class 10a non-habitable building or falls under another classification.
Under the Building Regulations 2018, many smaller agricultural structures on rural-zoned land can be exempt from a building permit if they meet specific floor area and height thresholds. A stable over those thresholds, or any stable on a residential zone, will require a permit. Zone conditions, Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) ratings, and any planning overlays on your land can also affect this.
