An aircraft hangar is one of the most demanding structures a private landowner can commission. It needs to span wide, stand tall, and resist the full range of Victorian weather conditions. It also needs to open reliably, seal well, and remain structurally sound across decades of use.

Structural Steel Frames Versus C-Section Kits
Most shed suppliers build with C-section steel frames. C-section is lighter and cheaper to produce. For small domestic sheds, it is adequate. For an aircraft hangar, it is not.
An aircraft hangar requires a clear internal span wide enough to accommodate the aircraft’s wingspan, with no internal columns obstructing movement. RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) structural steel delivers that capacity for most private and light aircraft hangars.
Where a hangar needs to clear a wider span, such as a multi-bay hangar or one built for a larger commercial or twin-engine aircraft, Trusteel specifies universal beams or Open Web Joists instead, since both carry greater load across a longer unsupported span than RHS alone. C-section frames can deflect under load and are not suited to the wide clear spans a hangar requires, regardless of which of the three Trusteel specifies for your build.

The Hangar Build Process
- Initial consultation: Trusteel discusses your aircraft type, site location, access requirements, and intended use. This shapes the design brief before any drawing begins.
- Design and engineering: Our in-house team produces structural drawings and engineering certification specific to your site and span requirements. Aircraft hangar design accounts for door loading, wind classification, and floor specification.
- Permit application: Trusteel prepares and lodges the building permit application under the Building Act 1993. Where a planning permit is also required, we guide you through that process before lodging.
- Fabrication: Steel frames and components are fabricated in our Melbourne facility. Fabrication is not outsourced. Quality control happens in-house, at every stage.
- Site construction: Trusteel’s own construction crews manage the full build. Concreting, steel erection, roofing, cladding, window and door installation are all coordinated by us.
- Handover: You receive a completed, permit-approved hangar ready for use. All documentation, including the occupancy permit, is provided at handover.
Permits for Hangar Construction in Victoria
Any aircraft hangar built on private land in Victoria requires a building permit under the Building Act 1993. This applies regardless of whether the land is rural, semi-rural, or adjacent to a private airstrip.
Depending on the zoning of your property, a planning permit from your local council may also be required before a building permit can be issued. Rural zones, green wedge zones, and farming zones each carry different rules. Getting this sequence right at the start avoids delays later.
