Trusteel Fabrications has designed and built steel barn sheds across Melbourne and regional Victoria since 1976. Every barn is custom-designed to the buyer’s site, use case, and council requirements. No standard kits, no volume templates.
Trusteel holds domestic and commercial building licences under the VBA. This means permits are managed directly by Trusteel, not subcontracted or passed back to the buyer. One contract covers design, permits, fabrication, delivery, concrete, and construction.
The three barn styles Trusteel builds serve different purposes. Choosing the right one depends on what you need to house, how much internal height you require, and what your property zone allows.
What We Build
Trusteel builds custom steel barn sheds in three distinct styles, each suited to different property types and uses.

Three Barn Styles. One Builder.
Each of Trusteel’s three barn styles is designed for a specific use. Matching the right barn to your property avoids costly changes later.
- The Air Vented Stable Barn is built specifically for horse stabling. It combines roof ventilation with an internal column layout suited to stable panel fixing.
- The American Raised Roof Barn delivers maximum internal height and roof space. It suits workshops, loft storage, car hoists, and large machinery.
- The Aussie Barn is the most widely used barn style for rural residential buyers. It is a lower-profile, wider structure suited to general rural storage and vehicle undercover.
Air Vented Stable Barn
The Air Vented Stable Barn is Trusteel’s purpose-built barn design for horse accommodation. The roof structure incorporates ventilation to regulate temperature and airflow inside the shed, which matters for both animal health and stable management.
Internal columns are placed to serve as direct fixing points for horse stable panels. This removes the need to retrofit timber framing or secondary supports after construction.

American Barn and Raised Roof Barns
The American barn style is defined by its high-pitched roofline and the additional internal height it creates. That roof volume is what makes this style different from any other shed design.
The raised roof profile creates space for a full loft storage platform above the main floor area. Buyers use that storage space for hay bales, equipment, spare parts, or anything else requiring separation from the main floor.

Aussie Barn
The Aussie Barn has a lower, wider roof profile compared to the American raised roof style. It is Trusteel’s most commonly built barn for rural residential and hobby farm properties.
Typical uses include hay storage, grain storage, vehicle undercover, farm machinery storage, and general rural storage. The Aussie barn suits properties where internal height is less critical than floor area and covered span.
It is a simpler structure than the American barn, and RHS is the standard frame for this style, since the Aussie Barn’s lower profile and evenly distributed roof loads do not typically require the wider-span capacity of universal beams or Open Web Joists. Structural Steel Frames Versus C-Section Kits
Most volume shed suppliers build with C-section frames. C-section is a lighter, cheaper rolled steel profile. It works for basic storage structures where loads are light and spans are short.
Barn sheds place different structural demands on a frame. Loft platforms carry concentrated loads. Raised roof profiles generate greater wind uplift. Livestock environments expose steel to moisture and ammonia over many years.
Trusteel builds every barn on Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS), universal beam, or Open Web Joist structural steel portal frames, matched to the barn style and its load.
RHS is the standard for the Aussie Barn and the Air Vented Stable Barn, where spans are moderate and loads sit evenly across the frame. The American Raised Roof Barn is different. A loft platform, a car hoist, or a wider clear span all concentrate load onto fewer support points, so Trusteel specifies universal beams or Open Web Joists instead, since both carry a heavier point load across a longer span than RHS alone.
All three are closed or structural profile members, significantly stronger and more rigid than a C-section frame of equivalent weight.
Here is what that means for your barn build:
- Frames carry greater roof loads without deflection, which matters where a loft platform is installed
- Closed and structural steel sections resist corrosion from the inside, extending the working life of the structure
- Wider clear spans without intermediate columns, giving you more usable floor space
- Car hoist installation requires a frame engineered for point loads, which RHS, UB, and Open Web Joists handle and C-section typically does not
- Livestock environments demand durability over decades, and structural steel is the appropriate frame for that requirement
C-section frames are a reasonable choice for light-duty storage sheds. For a barn carrying a loft, housing a car hoist, or sheltering animals for 30 or more years, RHS, universal beam, or Open Web Joist steel is the right frame.
The Barn Build Process
Trusteel manages every stage from first contact to handover. You do not coordinate separate trades.
- Site Assessment. Trusteel reviews your site, including zone, slope, orientation, and access. This informs the design and flags any permit conditions before design work begins.
- Design and Engineering. Your barn is drawn to your site and use requirements. Structural engineering is completed in-house. All engineering documentation is prepared for permit submission.
- Permits and Building Code of Australia (BCA) Compliance. Trusteel submits the building permit application on your behalf. As a VBA-registered building practitioner, Trusteel manages this process directly. You do not need to engage a separate registered builder.
- Fabrication at Mulgrave. Your barn is fabricated at Trusteel’s Mulgrave facility. RHS portal frames, roofing, cladding, and all components are prepared before delivery to site.
- Concrete and Site Preparation. Trusteel manages the concrete pad footings or slab. You do not need to organise a separate concreter. Footing and slab design is integrated with the structural engineering for the barn.
- Construction and Handover. Trusteel’s construction crew erects the barn on site. Inspections are completed and the structure is handed over with all required documentation.
Permits for Barn Sheds in Victoria
Barn sheds in Victoria require a building permit under the Building Act 1993 where they exceed specific size thresholds. Most barn sheds, given their scale and intended use, will require a permit regardless of zone.
Rural zone and residential zone rules apply differently. In rural zones, agricultural exemptions may reduce the approval burden for genuine farm structures, but these exemptions have conditions. In residential zones, standard permit requirements apply from the point of exceeding the threshold size.
Where your property has a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating, additional construction requirements apply under the BCA. These are factored into Trusteel’s engineering and permit submission.
Trusteel holds VBA registration as a domestic and commercial registered building practitioner. This means the permit application is submitted and managed by Trusteel. You have one point of contact from design to handover and no requirement to navigate the permit system yourself.
